Hello Lovely!
It’s been awhile, but I’m still here.
During my six month hiatus, things have changed a little in the Magee house.
Firstly, if you don’t already follow along with our daily life on Instagram or Facebook, we’ve been cooking up something sweet. Baby number FOUR is on the way! Hooray!!
I will be back next week to recap my first trimester, but for now I will only be giving a pregnancy update from our 20 week ultrasound.
Pre-Ultrasound
This, obviously, isn’t my first rodeo. I have been up close and personal with many ultrasound techs in the past five years. In fact, this wasn’t even my first ultrasound during this current pregnancy.
In the lead up, I didn’t really have any pre-conceived ideas about anything. I was hoping they would change my due date back to the original projection of late January, but quickly saw that baby was measuring right around their early February prediction.
I was a little unnerved that I would have to worry about another high-risk pregnancy after having a Velamentous insertion of the Umbilical Cord during my third pregnancy. If you didn’t follow along with that pregnancy, you can read more about VCI and my experience here.
In my first meeting with my OBGYN, she assured me that it was a 1 in 1 million chance of having VCI again, which made my worrying much less. But, as any mom would, I still had some fear that I would have the same experience or something worse.
In the days leading to the ultrasound, I didn’t experience anything to warrant any worry about the scan so I was keeping quite calm.
The Process
The process started and remained quite similar to my previous three 20 week scans. Though COVID-19 has made some differences in my medical care, I was still able to bring Justin along with me!
It really helped settle my nerves having him there. He hasn’t accompanied me to any of my appointments after my first pregnancy, but he has typically always come to the 20 week ultrasound.
There were a few moments we looked at each other knowing the tech was grabbing more images and recordings of my anatomy than what is typically normal. However, I did mention my concerns about the cord insertion and she said she would double-check for our benefit.
When it was time to wipe all the goo off my belly and head up to my OBGYN, I asked Justin to also come with me in case we were to receive bad news. Previously, I had to learn about the cord issue alone and it was very hard emotionally.
Ultrasound Results
We headed to see my OBGYN directly after the ultrasound, noticing that we took longer than expected. We were technically late for the following appointment, which did make me a bit more weary.
My doctor came in after seeing a couple of patients that actually got to their appointments on time. She was in a good mood, we chitchatted about life while her files loaded, and she went over some of the results.
Everything was checking out great, and she felt great about the change to my due date. However, her smile fell when she asked, “Didn’t we just deal with a Velamentous Cord Insertion?”
I could feel my heartbeat in my face.
Here We Go, Again.
So, here we are. The chance was 1 in 1 million, but it is what it is.
We know where to go from here, and my doctor feels confident with our plan. I will not have to meet with MFM (maternal fetal medicine) this time, which will make the process easier to manage. But, there will be more ultrasounds and scans than we had anticipated.
They will likely induce me if I don’t go into labor naturally between 37 and 38 weeks to prevent the umbilical cord from detaching.
Conclusion
I will keep everything pretty up-to-date on my Instagram feed and stories, but I will also try to keep periodic updates here as well.
In case you were wondering, we did not find out gender this time and will be surprised when baby gets here!
Thank you to everyone that has asked for updates and wished us well on this pregnancy! Your thoughts and words mean more to me than you will ever know!
